Smart parking system
in Wrocław

About the company

Wrocław, the capital city of Lower Silesia, is Poland’s third largest city. The metropolis is home to more than 650 thousand people. This figure should be increased to 5 million tourists a year. The Old Town, impressive monuments and a wide range of cultural and entertainment activities represent just a selection of the attractions that appeal to visitors.

The authorities of Wrocław embraced a development strategy focused on measures aimed at improving quality of life, investment in innovation and environmental initiatives. Consequently, one of the objectives of the municipal council is to promote mobility and public transport.

Customer’s view

The platform means that we are aware of the number of parking spaces occupied and therefore also of their use. This facilitates the proper management of parking spaces.

We employ Narrowband IoT technology provided by T-Mobile. It is an extremely secure radio data network. What is of greatest importance to the user is the ParkDots application. A resident using it is informed of which parking space is available and which is occupied.

Challenge
taken

Drivers in search of parking spaces may intensify traffic by up to 30%. This is integral to transport smoothness and has a negative impact on the environment. This is especially evident in the Old Town area, where the intense flow of tourists entails the presence of numerous coaches. Although vehicles are only allowed to park for 15 minutes in this area, a large number extend this time for several hours or a whole day.

What was also essential was to enable people with reduced mobility to find accessible parking spaces quickly. Faced with this challenge, Wrocław City Hall reached out to Smart City solutions.

What did the Customer seek?

Wrocław needed a solution to control parking spaces for both tourist coaches and vehicles of disabled people. It was also crucial to enforce respect for parking time limits in the Old Town area.

Application of solutions and technologies

Narrowband-IoT

The Narrowband-IoT network allows fast and efficient data acquisition from measurement points. It covers the whole of Poland and operates in places inaccessible to mobile networks before. The licensed dedicated band eradicates the problem of noise and interference.

As part of the deployment, the investor gets a ready-made system including: a mobile app, a data aggregation platform and the necessary equipment together with installation and configuration.

Smart parking is the perfect response to public traffic service challenges. The Narrowband-IoT-based solution boosts the city’s throughput by making it easier to find and navigate to free parking spaces.
