Objectives and Challenges

Partially located on marshy terrain, Kołobrzeg offers strong investment and tourism potential. To ensure resident safety and create favourable conditions for future development, city authorities were in search of modern solutions for water level monitoring. The key challenge was to continuously track flood risks in flood-prone zones and areas designated for potential development.
The aim of the project was not only to enhance safety but also to improve urban space management by providing reliable data to investors and municipal services. This investment sought to remove barriers to growth, streamline city operations, and help build a city that is truly resident-friendly.

Joint Action

The collaboration began with an analysis of the investor’s needs and requirements. Suitable devices and systems were presented – designed specifically for the demanding conditions in which measurements are taken.

Telemetry modules were installed in three locations specified by the client, then underwent nearly a year of testing. The analysis confirmed that the implemented solution met the expectations of the city authorities.

Narrowband IoT Deployment

The city decided to purchase ten ultrasonic sensors operating in the Narrowband IoT network. These devices monitor water levels in drainage ditches, with real-time data made available through a dedicated monitoring platform.

Together with the client, we developed a data visualisation system on this platform*. As part of the deployment, the city also received the ability to configure alert thresholds, which – when exceeded – trigger SMS or email notifications. This capability speeds up response times in emergency situations.

Benefits of Our Partnership

Remote Monitoring

24/7 water quality monitoring

Automation

Real-time readings from multiple devices simultaneously.

Extended Coverage

Monitoring even in hard-to-reach locations.

Customised Measurements

Each device can be configured according to the specific needs of its location.

SMS/Email Alerts

What the Client Gains from IoT Technology

Time Savings

No need for manual data verification from devices.

Safety

Improved safety for residents and developments through rapid flood detection.

Historical Data Analysis

Review of archived data as a critical tool for investment and water resource planning.

New Projects

The Kołobrzeg authorities plan to purchase and implement a system for measuring rainfall across the entire city.

The priority is to create an early warning system for sudden downpours and resulting overflow of storm drains, which could lead to local flooding.
Additionally, to improve resident comfort and safety, the city is systematically expanding its intelligent street lighting control system.
